LOS ANGELES —The Museum of Contemporary Art presents Art in the Streets, the first major U.S. museum exhibition on the history of graffiti and street art, April 17 through August 8, 2011, at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. The exhibition will trace the development of graffiti and street art from the 1970s to the global movement it has become today, concentrating on key cities where a unique visual language or attitude has evolved.

Extreme Makeover...

We are still renovating the store and just put up some new racks. We got in a couple new prints to put above the racks and I think they look dope! The first print is none other than Andre the Giant and Jimmy Superfly Snuka and I pity the fool who doesnt know who is on the second print!! We still have more projects underway so stay tuned as we get our Extreme Store Makeover on!

Sticky Fingers...

I'm not an art collector by any means but I do admire certain works by artists such as Warhol. One day when I'm a bit older and settled in a house I plan on buying a few Warhol's, especially Dracula! Anyways this post isnt about which Warhol paintings I like, rather some news that I just saw on tv. Last week 10 Warhol portraits were stolen from a Los Angeles home of noted art collector Richard L. Weisman. The prints were that of the "The Athletes" series featuring the likes of Pele, OJ Simpson, Kareem and Ali to name a few. Being a huge sports fan in general these are actually some of my favorite Warhol paintings. I cant imagine the feeling of having these stolen and there is a reward of one million dollars being offered for information leading to the recovery of the paintings.

Junk in the Dunk...

Check out this creation by Gabriel Dishaw called the Junk Dunk. The shoe is a sz 9.5 and weighs 5 lbs but unfortunatley they aren't for sale because they are part of Gabriel's personal collection. "I used very little wire and more glue to keep the piece more clean, and less bulky. I also added new details, a hinged tongue and nike logo's on both the tongue and back of the shoe. On previous models I used a real nike sole to build of off. With this piece I started from scratch and build the sole from circuit boards. "

CHEERIES jubilee...

POW just released a new Parra print today which is pretty dope. The print is called "Cherries" (for obvious reasons) and is limited to 150 pieces with a price of $190 US. I just checked and there were only 15 left so if youre interested I suggest buying it now.

Michelin Man...

Yesterday I posted the life size Kaws Chum figure that I saw this weekend at the House of Campari in LA and now pics just surfaced of new Chum key chains. After the success of the Companion Keyrings, the Chum character is now up for the treatment by Original Fake. The keyring comes in the 5 colorways shown above and they will be released at colette on June 26th. Source

Timothy Watters...

I ramdonly came across this site and was suprised to see some dope oil paintings. The thing about these is they remind me of the stained glass which I love and some of the paintings are my favorite oldschool pics like the Ice Cube and Biggie ones above. Sick Pics...

Above are a couple of my favorite Shawn Mortensen (RIP) hip hop pictures featuring the late great Notorious BIG (RIP). The first picture is BIGGIE in a red leather jacket, rockin 2 Jesus pieces with the Versasce shades. Awhile back FUCT released a t-shirt with the image in conjunction with Mortensen's new book, “Out of Mind”. Shawn remembers the shoot as being very upbeat and fun. He said Biggie was cracking jokes the entire time, (hence the big smile on Biggie’s face) This photo was shot at the Good Luck Bar in Los Angeles, California.

The second pic is the now famous BIG x BAPE pic in which Biggie has on a Bathing Ape Camo jacket LOOOOONG before it became mainstream. I've heard numerous stories but the one that seems to be real is that BIG didn't actually own the jacket it was someones at the photo shoot and they just draped it over him for the shot.....you can see his left arm isn't through the sleeve so this makes sense.

Sadly Mortensen passed away on April 15, 2009, at the age of 43 but his legacy will live on through his pictures.

Sneaker Art...

Banksy...

Im a little late with this one but I thought I would share for anyone who hasnt seen this yet. Last month an Original Banksy "Balloon Girl" was auctioned on eBay and although the final bid was only $5,000 and the reserve wasn't met the story behind the piece is priceless.

The Artwork
You´re bidding on an original artwork of world-famous street artist Banksy which was sprayed on a wall on Mona Road, Kingston, Jamaica, by the artist during a visit to the island in the year 2004. It is roughly 60 inches by 55 inches and about 7 inches thick. It weighs approximately 2000 pounds. Done by the artist in 2004 on Mona road in Kingston, Jamaica. Shipping (to any country but Jamaica) for the wall to your door will be roughly $10k. This is the artcoup of the year.

The Story
It was a non-eventful day when he actually drew them. He bought some construction paper from a local pharmacy and cut the stuff out. Then he drew this stencil of a girl on an exterior wall and some rabbits on the inside the pub itself. I kind of just stood there taking his picture because it was something to do. I had already captured his face back at Buju’s studio where he had done some other stuff so this was just extra. I didn’t really think much of it. I mean I live in a place where people get shot for marking up people’s walls (usually with a paintbrush), so a few sprayed stencils on the wall of a pub didn’t strike me as particularly interesting. Later when I heard how much his stuff was selling for, I contemplated going back and chopping the wall down. It was there for years and I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought about doing it. Mona road is heavily travelled by a lot of foreign students on their way to the university so people from all over the world would often mention it, but nobody ever took the steps to cut it down…till this last August when I got a email from someone asking about my knowledge of the locations Banksy had tagged. That’s when I figured I should probably go get it before someone else did. The wall is the last remaining tag that he did in Jamaica that can be seen in public. It’s also the only remaining stencil that has the tag BANKSY on it. The other ones were: A bridge in Charleton gully which was painted over. A rusting old ship near the airport (a stencil of a skull, crossbones and the signature ‘Banksy’has since faded) Buju Banton’s studio in Kingston (where there is another ‘balloon girl’ and some flying insects). The wall is 60 inches by 55 inches and about 7 inches thick. It weighs like 2000 pounds though that is just a guess. I spent the day getting a bunch of drunk guys to cut it down and raise it onto a flatbed truck tied to one of those sealtbelt-type industrial straps. I was amazed that it didn’t smash to pieces which would have really been an incredible waste of energy and patience. All the guys in that video (including me) had no real idea how to cut the thing down (much less move it) and were completely impaired by the time we actually got it tied to a backhoe (borrowed from a nearby construction site). Ironically, the damn thing almost fell on me in which case there would be a much funnier headline : 'Jamaican who revealed Banksy killed by falling artwork'.

POW (Pictures On Walls) just released theirt first print of 2009 and its brought to by none other than Steven Powers aka ESPO. The print reads “EVERYTHING IS SHIT Except you Love” and I think this would make a great Valentines Day present for your loved one ;-) Im thinking about picking the black one up but I better act fast because as Im typing this 5 have sold and the yellow is already sold out!!!

A Long Way Home...

Honor Fraser (2622 La Cienega BLVD, Los Angeles, CA) will host “A Long Way Home,” a new collection of work by Kaws beginning on February 21, 2009. Ecko x Marco...

A couple months back I posted info about a dope artist Marco out of NYC that created some RUN DMC paintings for Rev Run. I saw some of the paintings on an episode of Runs House awhile ago and I though they were amazing!! We'll to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of RUN DMC Marco teamed up with Mark Ecko to produce this ultra limited edition Hollis Crew 25th Anniversary Tee Shirt. The shirt features a print of Marcos celebrated BOOM BOX painting which was prominently showcased on MTVs Runs House. Only 1,000 of these shirts were made 100 of which were sold at the launch party on Dec, 11th 2008 at Marc Eckos Cut and Sew showroom. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of the shirts will go to benefit the Jam Master Jay Foundation . The shirts retail for $24.00 and are available at Ecko.com

Warm Regards...

The Kaws Warm Regards print is my favorite print of all time and now it looks like Kaws is releasing a vinyl toy of his creation. The toy is obviously inspired by ice cream and comes in 3 colors or flavors you might say (chocolate, vanilla & strawberry)! There is no official word on the release date yet or how limited they will be but I'll keep you posted if I hear anything. Source Highsnobiety
